Choosing the technology
Logistics is often a hybrid: Passive RFID for item/pallet identity at portals, GPS for outdoor yard and trailers, and BLE or active RFID for zone-level asset visibility. The mix follows where identity-at-a-point versus continuous-position each pays back.

Tie every read and position to your WMS so dashboards and decisions update automatically. Pilot in one site’s real conditions — weather, metal, throughput — before rolling across a network.
Logistics locating: docks, yards and aisles — match the radio to the choke-point
In logistics, locating value concentrates at decisions: Did the right pallet leave Door 7? How long has a trailer dwelled in the yard? Where is the forklift that should be at Bay 12? Which tote is stuck in an aisle? Buying continuous centimetre tracking for every carton is rarely the economic answer; designing gate events, zone presence and selective continuous tracking against those decisions is.
Highest-ROI locating patterns. Passive RFID portals for inbound/outbound reconciliation and returnable-asset custody; yard and trailer visibility with active/BLE or GNSS depending on outdoor coverage; forklift and high-value asset tracking with BLE AoA or UWB; and collision-avoidance / pedestrian safety with UWB where distance thresholds must be trusted. Cycle counting and inventory accuracy programmes should cost tag mix and exception labour honestly — tag spend can dwarf readers at high unit volumes.
Technology selection without the brochure. Use Passive RFID when identity at a door is enough. Use BLE when you need aisle- or zone-level continuous visibility across large floorplates. Use UWB when forklift–pedestrian safety or dense metal racking demands sub-metre confidence. Many 3PL and DC designs are hybrids: RFID at docks, BLE in the building, UWB on a few safety geofences.
Operational design. Prove read rates on real pallet wrap and mixed SKUs; shield adjacent docks; integrate events into WMS/YMS so workers do not reconcile in a second screen; and pilot on a live shift with peak inbound, not a quiet Sunday. Acceptance should include OTIF/dock-to-stock or inventory-accuracy movement against a pre-pilot baseline.
Rollout discipline. Standardise portal and locator designs per building class; keep a spares pool; re-tune after racking changes; and expand site-by-site only after the first building clears go/no-go on accuracy, integration and adoption. Locating that stops at a pretty yard map will not move logistics KPIs.
Yard-to-dock locating flow and exception handling
Design the locating flow as a chain: yard arrival visibility, door assignment, portal identity capture, aisle or zone tracking for exceptions, and outbound verification. Each hop should have an owner and a system of record. Exceptions — non-reads, misassociates, orphan totes — need handheld playbooks and time limits so the dock does not invent shadow processes.
Seasonality matters: designs that pass in February can fail in peak. Include a peak rehearsal in acceptance where possible, or at least stress tests with concurrent doors active. For outdoor yards, be explicit about GNSS versus local RTLS coverage and how handoffs work at the building envelope.
Safety overlays (forklift–pedestrian) must be tested for false negatives with the same seriousness as inventory read-rate. A locating programme that improves OTIF but weakens safety geometry is not a successful logistics deployment.
Data quality rules that keep logistics locating trustworthy
Define master-data rules for asset IDs, trailer IDs and door IDs before go-live. Locating events that cannot join cleanly to WMS/YMS create noise operators ignore. Set thresholds for dwell alerts that operations agrees are actionable. Audit a sample of portal reads daily in the first month and publish exception trends. Trust in locating data is an operational asset — treat it like one.
For multi-building campuses, standardise event semantics even if radio layers differ by building. Analytics and control-tower views break when Door 7 means three different things across sites.
From one building to network standard
After the first DC clears portal, yard and safety gates, publish a locating standard: door classes, portal drawings, radio overlays, event semantics and exception SOPs. Roll site-by-site with local peak rehearsals. Network control towers only work when Door 7 means the same thing everywhere and locating events share a schema.
Keep a central spares and tune squad for the first peak season; that is cheaper than rediscovering adjacent-door cross-reads at every building independently.
