ATEX & IECEx — gevaarlijke gebieden RTLS.
Zone classification drives which people tags are legal
ATEX (Directive 2014/34/EU) and IECEx share the IEC 60079 technical base. Gas zones 0/1/2 and dust zones 20/21/22 map to equipment protection levels Ga/Gb/Gc and Da/Db/Dc. A person walking into Zone 0 with a Zone 1-only tag is a compliance failure — not an IT inconvenience.
Most industrial people-tags aimed at oil & gas, chemicals and mining are Ex ia intrinsically safe, often certified II 1 G / Zone 0 capable (EPL Ga) with matching dust ratings. Anchors and gateways are usually placed in Zone 2 or safe areas; forcing dense UWB infrastructure into Zone 0 is rarely the right architecture.
Certificates are model-specific. Battery chemistry, antenna variants and 'X' special conditions matter. Opening a tag in the field, swapping unapproved cells, or using an unlisted clip can void the certificate. Procurement must buy the certified SKU, not the visually similar commercial twin.
People-tag programmes: mustering, lone worker and collision avoidance
Hazardous-area RTLS for people is almost always a safety programme first: SOS buttons, man-down, geofenced exclusion, vehicle–pedestrian proximity, and muster headcount. Accuracy claims must be proven in metal-dense process units, not empty warehouses.
IECEx CoPC (personnel competence) is separate from equipment certificates — it covers people who install and inspect Ex equipment. Your install partner needs the right competency units; your operators wearing tags do not become Ex-installers by wearing a badge.
Challenge vendors who quote a single 'ATEX tag' without stating gas group, temperature class, ambient range, and whether Wi-Fi / BLE / UWB / GNSS radios inside the device are covered by the same certificate schedule.
Procurement and installation pitfalls
Map every zone on the plot plan before RF design. Hybrid architectures (Ex tags + non-Ex anchors outside) are normal; pretending the whole site is Zone 2 to cheapen hardware is how programmes fail audits.
Budget the 3–5× hardware premium for Ex gear, longer lead times, and certified charging regimes. Include inspection intervals and spare-tag pools in opex. Gate 1 should produce a certified-BOM and an install method statement aligned to your hazardous-area electrical standards.
Inspection, maintenance and change control in Ex zones
Certified equipment remains compliant only if installed and maintained per the certificate and your site electrical standards. Untested antennas, aftermarket batteries and 'temporary' non-Ex gateways left in Zone 1 are classic audit findings.
Change control must cover firmware that affects RF energy or enclosure integrity. Coordinate OT cybersecurity patches with Ex inspection schedules so you do not choose between CVE closure and certificate validity.
Scoping hazardous-area locating with TRACIO
Gate 1 delivers zone-mapped BOM options, certified tag shortlists, anchor placement outside the worst zones where possible, and an integration plan for muster and permit-to-work systems. We challenge any proposal that ignores dust groups, temperature class or special conditions buried in the certificate schedule.
NEC/CEC Class Division vs ATEX zone mapping for global fleets
US Gulf Coast sites often speak Class/Division while European sister plants speak zones. Global programmes need a mapping table so the same people-tag strategy does not accidentally under-certify one geography.
cMEus / dual-certified tags reduce SKU sprawl but still require site-level ambient and gas-group checks. Do not assume dual logo equals universal fit.
Mustering maths under Ex constraints
Sparse anchor grids in Zone 1 force reliance on last-known zone and portal transitions. Design accountability logic for uncertainty bands and train emergency teams on what 'amber' presence means. Over-claiming precision in Ex areas is a safety and legal risk.
Veelgestelde vragen
Welke RTLS-leveranciers bieden ATEX/IECEx-gecertificeerde hardware aan?
Sewio, Ubisense (geselecteerde modellen), Kontakt .io (geselecteerd), verschillende gespecialiseerde Ex-tag fabrikanten.
Voorzichtig. EPL Ga-uitrusting is zeldzaam in RTLS. Architectuurontwerp is gate-1 werk.
