Passive RFID install cost — what your quote should look like.
A Passive RFID fixed reader costs €600–€1,500. The install bill is €1,200–€2,000 per portal. On a 12-dock site, hardware is €7,200 and install is €18,000+. Most procurement teams budget against the wrong line.
The full Passive RFID install cost stack.
Hardware: fixed reader €600–€1,500 per unit (Impinj, Zebra, Honeywell, Alien, CAEN); antenna €40–€200 each (2–4 per portal); tags €0.05–€0.30 per inlay at volume.
Install labour: €1,200–€2,000 per portal — RF-tuned antenna placement, dock-door geometry compensation, near-field shielding, conveyor integration, PoE backbone with RTLS VLAN, commissioning under live load.
RTLS-grade RFID (ATR7000, RF Controls): hardware €1,500–€3,500 per ceiling array; install €1,500–€2,500 per unit because phased-array placement is unforgiving.
Integration: typically 20–40% of total programme cost — WMS / ERP / MES event integration, master data alignment, exception handling, dashboards, change management.
Where install bills get padded.
Over-specified portal count. A 12-dock site does not need 18 portals. Vendor over-spec exists because every extra portal is margin plus install labour.
Antenna placement based on spec sheet, not dock geometry. Most dock doors have unique geometry. Standardised antenna positions fail; reads drop; vendor adds antennas at full price.
Conveyor integration scoped as TBD. Conveyor-side RAIN requires careful read-zone definition. Deferring to phase 2 hides €5k–€15k of integration work per conveyor.
Managed-services tail with 30%+ year-2 escalation. Read the small print on read-rate guarantees and year-2 escalation.
What an independent install audit catches.
Antenna placement against actual dock-door geometry — typically removes 2–4 antennas from a 12-portal design.
Near-field shielding for adjacent dock proximity — installers often skip this and accuracy drops to 80% within months.
RF tag-orientation validation against tagged-item form factor — pallet-level reads differ wildly from carton-level.
Conveyor read-zone tuning under live load, not at commissioning.
PoE network design with dedicated RTLS VLAN per IEC 62443.
Frequently asked questions
Why is RFID installation so much more expensive than the hardware?
The work itself (RF survey, antenna placement, commissioning at production load), the skill required (qualified RF installers are scarce), and the risk (the contractor takes on accuracy liability the hardware vendor excludes).
How many portals does a 12-dock site actually need?
Twelve. Sometimes ten if dock-door geometry allows. We have audited vendor designs for 12-dock sites that specified 18 portals.
Can you install RAIN RFID portals independently?
Yes — as Engagement B in our infrastructure service model. We do the physical cabling, antenna mounting and commissioning at €900–€1,400 per portal, fully loaded. We earn no margin on the hardware installed.
What is the typical RAIN RFID install timeline?
Single 12-dock site: 4–6 weeks including RF survey, design, install, commissioning under live load and acceptance test. Multi-site rollouts run 6–18 months.
