Hire the partner type before you hire the radio.
The market mixes independent specialists, systems integrators, supplier professional services, and Location-as-a-Service. They all say “independent.” Only some of them still get paid when the right answer is not to buy.

Four partner types buyers actually meet.
Independent locating specialist: we work for you, not for the technology providers. No product or twin platform of our own to defend, and supply only if you choose, on a separate contract from our advice. Output is requirements, shortlist, architecture, RFP scoreability, gates, and (when asked) delivery oversight or rescue. TRACIO sits here.
RTLS / digital-twin systems integrator (SI): designs and deploys. Often claims independent evaluation, then implements UWB/BLE/vision stacks, integrations, and managed care. Useful when you already know you need a builder. Incentive still skews toward a billable deployment. Public examples in this category package guidance + implementation + managed tiers and digital-twin simulation as one journey.
Supplier professional services: the OEM’s own PS or a certified partner. Deep on one stack; quiet on where that stack is the wrong physics. Fine after a neutral shortlist; risky as your first specialist.
Location-as-a-Service (LaaS): bundled hardware, software, install, and run in a subscription. Predictable opex; weaker exit and weaker “you own the architecture” story. Fit when you want a utility, not a programme you can retender.
Read our independence policy.
Where TRACIO sits, plainly.
We are an independent locating and operational visibility advisory. Advice first. We also supply, lease and integrate if you choose. We have no middleware suite of our own to protect.
That puts us above the suppliers (Zebra, Impinj, Quuppa and the rest) and beside the systems integrators. On larger programmes the right answer often includes an SI; our job is to make sure you pick the right one, on a requirement they can all be measured against, and that they build what was actually specified.
If you choose, we can also supply, lease and integrate the equipment ourselves, on a separate contract from our advice. You decide that after the recommendation, and it changes nothing about what we recommend.
The advice is paid for on its own, so it stands whether you buy through us, direct from the supplier, or not at all.
What “independent” hides.
SI sites and OEM blogs now all use the phrase. The test is economic, not rhetorical:
Who gets paid if UWB loses to portal RFID? If the answer is “we still install something,” you have a builder. If the answer is “we still get paid for being right,” you have a specialist.
Do they publish named logos as proof? Deploy SIs often do. Independent specialists under NDA usually cannot, and should not fake it.
Is digital twin the product? Many SI portfolios lead with twin + simulation. That can be right. It can also pull you into a platform before the locating KPI is proven. Specialists sequence twin after the system of record and the radio fit are accurate.
Managed care: whose SLA? SI managed tiers monitor anchors, tags, accuracy drift, and integrations (Essential / Professional / Enterprise patterns are now common). LaaS bundles the same under one supplier. Independent managed care holds your suppliers to their SLAs and keeps credentials, maps, and exit packs yours.
Competitors (guidance view).
Deploy SIs with guidance fronts: multi-office RTLS + digital-twin integrators that sell discovery, technology selection, supplier evaluation, implementation, and managed services as one funnel. Strong when you need hands on tools. Weak when you need someone who can kill a deployment.
Regional ready-to-run locators: European and APAC specialists (often Sewio/Quuppa/partner-led) who select among a shortlist of radios and deliver ready-to-run. Fast in their geography; less natural as a global, procurement-grade shortlist owner.
Silicon-to-WMS UWB boutiques: deep UWB engineering (sometimes Qorvo-partnered) that owns ranging through integration. Excellent when centimetre UWB is already the decision; not a substitute for a multi-radio business case.
OEM LaaS: hardware + run subscription. Simplifies contracting; concentrates lock-in.
Big-4 / generalist SI IoT practices: programme governance without locating physics depth. Pair them with a locating specialist, or expect the radio choice to arrive pre-decided by a preferred OEM.
When to hire which.
Start with an independent specialist when the RFP is unscoreable, two suppliers disagree on physics, a pilot stalled, procurement needs TCO that survives audit, or you must keep exit rights. See also independent RTLS specialist and guidance.
Hire an SI to build after the shortlist and architecture are frozen, or hire the specialist to oversee the SI, paid by you rather than by the suppliers.
Use supplier PS for stack-specific commissioning once the stack is chosen.
Consider LaaS when you want opex simplicity and accept thinner architectural ownership.
Managed care: once locating is production-critical, budget proactive drift control. Prefer a model that monitors business KPIs (muster time, miss-reads, search minutes), not only gateway uptime. TRACIO managed services are built that way.
Questions that expose the incentive.
- If portal RFID beats UWB on this dock, do you still earn from the deployment?
- You pay us for advice. Hardware supply is a separate, optional service, priced openly.
- Who owns maps, configs, and tag databases if we change SI in year three?
- Is the pilot designed to win a PO, or to fail closed on edge cases?
- Does “managed” mean you hold our suppliers to SLA, or that you become the single throat?

Frequently asked questions
What does an independent specialist cost compared with an integrator?
An integrator's guidance is usually free because the build pays for it, which is precisely the problem. The recommendation and the revenue sit on the same side of the table. Independent guidance is billed directly: TRACIO’s projects run from £3k to £30k depending on scope, and day-rate guidance is £1,200 a day. On a programme where the hardware and integration bill runs into seven figures, the guidance fee is a rounding error against the cost of choosing the wrong architecture.
Do you sell or resell hardware?
Only if you choose. Advice comes first; supply is optional and on a separate contract from our advice, and you can also buy direct from the supplier. We work for you, not for the technology providers. We are not enrolled in any partner programme that affects recommendations. We sell our time and our work: independent guidance and, when you want it, supply, installation, rental equipment and managed services. We routinely recommend the option that does not maximise our future scope, including telling clients that an existing system can be rescued rather than replaced, or that a problem is operational rather than technical.
Which technologies do you cover?
UWB for precise positioning, BLE 5.x with AoA for room and zone work, passive RFID for item-level visibility, active RFID and sensor tags for harsh environments, GPS / GNSS / RTK outdoors, LoRaWAN, NB-IoT and LTE-M for wide-area sensors, Wi-Fi RTT for opportunistic indoor positioning, plus ultrasound, vision and SLAM.
UWB is usually the most precise of these options. The accuracy you get depends on your site, and we confirm it in the survey. We pick the technology to fit the use case, and a single programme routinely mixes three or four layers.
How quickly can we get to value?
Discovery and use-case framing takes 2-4 weeks. An independent technology selection report with supplier scoring and ROI runs 4-6 weeks. A proof of concept in a controlled bay or zone is 4-8 weeks, and a single-site pilot with real operator adoption 8-16 weeks. Programme recovery starts with a paid 1-week diagnostic and a written go/no-go recommendation, followed by 2-3 weeks of recovery planning.
