Semtech LoRa — independent vendor assessment.
Semtech is the silicon foundation of the global LoRaWAN ecosystem — almost every LoRaWAN device and gateway uses Semtech chips. This is TRACIO's vendor-neutral assessment of when Semtech matters in vendor selection and how the LoRaWAN supply chain hangs together.
Who they are
Semtech (NASDAQ: SMTC) is a US-listed semiconductor company that acquired LoRa technology from Cycleo in 2012. They license the LoRa physical-layer modulation and sell LoRa transceivers (SX126x, LR1110, LR2021 families).
Effectively the sole silicon supplier for compliant LoRaWAN devices, with the LoRa Alliance overseeing the network-layer specification.
Where they're strongest
Silicon performance, range, power consumption — LoRa modulation is genuinely well-engineered for long-range, low-power, sub-GHz communication. Multi-band support across global ISM bands.
Newer LR1110 / LR2021 chips integrate GNSS and Wi-Fi sniffing for hybrid localisation. The LoRa Alliance ensures protocol-level interoperability across network operators.
Where they're not the right answer
Semtech doesn't sell finished LoRaWAN solutions — enterprises engage with device manufacturers (Kerlink, Multitech, Tektelic etc.), network operators (Actility, The Things Industries, public carriers), and platform vendors.
For enterprises evaluating LoRaWAN, the Semtech silicon is invisible; the decisions are about device, network and platform suppliers.
How they compare
Versus Sigfox: different LPWAN approach (Sigfox proprietary, LoRaWAN open standard); Sigfox has had business model challenges; LoRaWAN's ecosystem is more robust.
Versus NB-IoT and LTE-M: cellular LPWAN alternatives with different trade-offs (carrier-managed, broader coverage, higher device complexity). Many IoT projects evaluate both LoRaWAN and cellular LPWAN at stage 1.
Frequently asked questions
Do we engage with Semtech directly?
Rarely. Enterprise LoRaWAN procurement is about device, network and platform suppliers. Semtech silicon is universal.
Is LoRa proprietary?
The physical-layer modulation is Semtech IP. The network-layer LoRaWAN protocol is open via the LoRa Alliance. The two together form the standard.
LoRaWAN or cellular LPWAN (NB-IoT, LTE-M)?
Depends on coverage, device cost, network ownership preference and update frequency. We evaluate both per use case in stage 1.
Does LR1110 replace traditional LoRa transceivers?
No — LR1110 adds GNSS and Wi-Fi sniffing for hybrid localisation alongside LoRa. Useful for tracking applications combining outdoor (GNSS) and indoor (Wi-Fi RSSI) position.
